Overview of structural principles
The axial piston pump in this variable form is automatically controlled by the pump's own pressure. As shown in the figure, high-pressure oil flows through channels (a), (b), and (c) and enters the lower chamber (d) of the variable housing (302). From there, it enters channels (f) and (h) through channel (e) respectively. When the force of the spring is greater than the hydraulic thrust entering the lower annular area of the servo piston (309) through channel (f), the oil enters the upper chamber (g) through channel (h), pushing the variable piston (301) to move downward and increasing the pump's flow rate.

On the contrary, when the pressure of the pump overcomes the spring force and causes the servo piston to move upward, the channel (h) is blocked, allowing the oil in the (g) chamber to pass through (i) and relieve pressure. At this time, the variable piston moves upward and the flow rate of the pump decreases.

The following figure shows the variable characteristic curve of YCY14-1B pump, with shading indicating the range of characteristic adjustment. The slope of AB is determined by the stiffness of the outer spring (307), the slope of BC is determined by the combined stiffness of the outer spring (307) and the inner spring (306), and the length of CD depends on the position of the limit screw (limiting the tilt angle of the variable head).
When adjusting variable characteristics, if it is necessary to change according to the rule of A1B1C1D1, first screw the limit screw to the upper end, then adjust the spring sleeve (305) so that the pressure when the flow just changes is consistent with the pressure at point A1, and then adjust the limit screw so that the high-pressure flow when the flow no longer changes is consistent with the flow at point D1. The change relationship between the pressure and the flow is pre designed and does not need to be adjusted. As long as the flow and pressure at points A1 and D1 are adjusted properly, the pump will automatically change according to the A1B1C1 characteristic curve.
The characteristic curve of this variable type approximates a constant power variation. The parameters of the conversion points A1 and D1 for the above characteristics can be calculated as follows:

For example, if the process characteristics of a certain machine require the maximum pressure of the pump to be Pmax, the flow rate at point D1 is Q1 at Pmax, and the flow rate of the pump at low pressure is Qmax, then the pressure of the pump at point A1 is:
